“Hi, I'm Zheyi Zhang!
Born in 1975 in Guilin, China, now a New York City artist whose practice spans painting, works on paper, installation, and public art, rooted in a deep examination of the relationships between time, culture, and space. When I arrived in New York, it was the MetroCard that opened the city to me — a small rectangle of access that allowed me to travel, discover, and fall in love with every neighborhood and corner of this place — and so I began painting my experiences directly onto them, turning these everyday transit cards into miniature canvases that capture what I saw and felt as a newcomer finding his footing in one of the world's most electric cities. What started as an intimate personal practice has since grown into something much larger, inspiring a devoted cult following and an extensive international exhibition career spanning the US, Asia, Europe, and Australia — including three solo shows in New York City galleries alone!”
