“Hi, my name is Vanessa Summers!
I’m a Queens-based artist who pours my imagination into every piece I create. I dedicate my work to developing characters and stories through a fantastical lens, especially artwork that represents myself and other BIPOC individuals within the fantasy genre.
My love for fantasy began when I was young. I always found comfort in escaping into the worlds of movies and books, but I constantly noticed the lack of people of color within them. Because of that, I decided to create my own worlds and characters, worlds where Black and Brown people are just as present as anyone else.
My work focuses on the whimsy and wonder of fantasy, depicting magical beings and fantasy races with more inclusive skin tones and facial features. I create spaces where BIPOC characters can be heroes, villains, strange, soft, powerful, possess magic, wield swords, and everything in between. In my world, fantasy is as limitless as imagination itself, and everyone has a place within it.”
